Federal plans to send two divisions away from the Valley to reinforce General McClellan’s Peninsula Campaign were cancelled. \u003cbr\u003eJackson retreated up the Valley Pike to Woodstock with the Federals following behind. He made his headquarters at the large two story log home of Miss Daisy Ruddell Stover. The home was located next to the Valley Pike at Narrow Passage Creek which flowed into the North Fork of the Shenandoah River. Believing Narrow Passage to be good ground to defend, General Jackson formed a defensive line to do battle if the Federals continued to advance. in \u003cbr\u003eOn the 26th of March General Jackson met for the first time the talented map maker Lt. Jedediah Hotchkiss. The General visited with Hotchkiss about his topographical drawing abilities and viewed some examples of his work. Jackson then said, “I want you to make me a map of the Valley, from Harper’s Ferry to Lexington, showing all points of L offense and defense in those places. Mr. Pendleton will give you orders for whatever outfit you want.” \u003cbr\u003eGeneral Jackson now had in place one of the key men who would give him the strategic information needed to out maneuver the Federal armies he was facing. Hotchkiss became one of the more valued members of the General’s personal staff. Formally designated as Company E of the 18th Virginia Cavalry, they were led by Captain John Hanson McNeill. The Rangers operated behind enemy lines attacking Federal wagon trains, outposts, railroad yards, and generally “raising hell” anywhere they had the chance. \u003cbr\u003e     Sadly on October 3rd 1864 in a predawn attack near Mt. Jackson, Captain John Hanson was mortally wounded. The command of the unit was passed to his son, Z2 year old Lt. ]esse McNeill. ]esse was known as a superior rider, an excellent shot, but was impetuously bold and brash to a fault. His father once described him as “a hair-brained daredevil if ever there was one.” \u003cbr\u003e     Two years earlier, Captain John McNeill had devised a plan to kidnap US Generals Kelly and Cook for the discourtesy shown to his wife in 1862. Mrs. McNeill had been refused a travel passport by General Kelly to visit her husband in Moorefield. While traveling without a passport through the area she was arrested and sent back to Ohio. \u003cbr\u003e     Now in command of the Rangers and with the help of John B. Fay, Jesse decided to put his father’s plan into action. Fay was born in Cumberland and knew every house and street in the city. Jesse sent Fay and C. Richie Hallar to scout the city of Cumberland learning where US Major Generals Crook and Kelly would be sleeping. Fay was also tasked to find the best route for the Rangers to take through enemy territory. \u003cbr\u003e     During a blinding snow storm on the night of February 21, 1865, McNeill’s Rangers headed for Cumberland Maryland. The Rangers rode quickly through the dark snowy countryside on New Creek road, when suddenly they encountered a Federal sentry post. As the sentry challenged the riders, “Halt! Who comes there”, instinctively Lt. Jesse McNeill charged the sentry firing his revolver at the man’s head as he passed. The shot missed the man but scared the sentries so bad, they immediately surrendered. But the Rangers were not happy with Jesse possibly sounding an alarm with gunfire. Fortunately the storm seemed to muffle the shot. Some Rangers wore Federal blue overcoats and fooled enemy pickets and patrols by whistling such Yankee tunes as they knew and bandying words with the Federals. The dark night and heavy snow made it impossible to distinguish between shades of gray or blue. An hour before daybreak the Rangers were in the city and went to work. Both Generals Crook and Kelly were quickly snatched from their beds, dressed and placed on mounts. The General’s headquarters flag and regimental flag were taken as trophies. Even General Kelly’s famous fine horse named “Philippi” was taken as a prize. Ranger John Fay led the way out of town at a fast pace. Four miles from the city an echoing boom of a cannon was heard in the distance, sounding the alarm. Federal cavalry was soon hot on their trail. \u003cbr\u003e     The expedition had been a great success. As the Rangers passed in front of the courthouse in Romney, the captured Generals and trophy flags made for a legendary moment. Leaving Romney in triumph, the Rangers took the little used Old Trough Hollow Road towards Moorefield with the Federal cavalry still in pursuit. \u003cbr\u003e     Describing the raid General John B. Gordon said, “ln daring and dash it is the most thrilling incident of the entire war.” Col. John S. Mosby (Mosby’s Rangers) extended his hand to Lt. Welton and said, “You boys have beaten me badly. quiet day. It was almost as if the two armies were stunned and recovering from the previous day's battle. However, what was to come would make yesterday's fighting seem like a skirmish. Major General Winfield Scott Hancock, commanding the much vaunted 2nd Corps of the Army of the Potomac had spent much of the day riding back and forth between army headquarters and his three division commanders, anticipating the actions of Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e    While Hancock was visiting the 1st Division, now under the command of General John C. Caldwell, movement was noticed to the left and behind the Weikert farm. To everyone's surprise General Sickles entire \"3rd Corps\" with flags flying and bayonets glistening in the sunlight\" was seen advancing to the Emmitsburg Road. Hancock immediately recognized the significance of this ill-advised spectacle and remarked, \"Wait a moment you will soon see them tumbling back.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e    A courier from General Meade soon arrived directing Hancock to send reinforcements to General Sickles embattled Divisions who were being hit hard by the advancing forces of General James Longstreet. At Hancock's direction, General Caldwell sent his Division of 3,200 men at the double-quick past the rising plume of smoke marking the burning barn of George Weikert. The Brigades of General Zook, Colonel Brooke, and Colonel Cross, along with Colonel Patrick Kelly's famed Irish Brigade, would soon be hurled into the maelstrom known as the Wheatfield and Rose Woods.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e    Although the 1st Division was ultimately thrown back with over 40 percent casualties, other units would be funneled into the Wheatfield fight. Due to the decisions of Hancock, and the 1st Division's strenuous efforts, time would be given for the rest of the Army of the Potomac to regroup and fight the Army of Northern Virginia to a standstill. Many battles had been fought with both sides winning and losing. Casualty counts were far beyond what anyone had considered possible. General Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia had lost a major battle at Gettysburg, but the South’s willingness to fight for their independence had not diminished. \u003cbr\u003eFederal strategy began to focus on destroying the South’s infrastructure which supplied Confederate forces in the field. In May, Federal General Franz Sigel’s army began its march from Winchester, intent on destroying the Virginia Central Railroad located in Staunton. If successful, General Lee’s Army would no longer receive the rich stores and supplies from the Shenandoah Valley. \u003cbr\u003e     To stop the Federal advance, the sparse Confederate forces under the command of General John C. Breckinridge and General John D. Imboden gathered all the troops they could muster. The Virginia Military Institute’s Superintendent Francis Smith was asked if his “School Boy Soldiers” would fall in. Taught from the very beginning at VMI the principles of duty and honor, the young men were eager to prove their worth as soldiers. The cadets marched for 4 days covering 80 muddy miles from Lexington to New Market in the drenching rain. \u003cbr\u003e     The battle of New Market began in earnest on the stormy morning of the 15th with lightning, thunder, and cannon fire echoing across the valley. General Breckinridge had not wanted to deploy his 250 young VMI cadets, and held them in a reserve position on the battlefield. But when a large gap opened in the center line of battle, Breckinridge with tears in his eyes said, “Put the boys in, and may God forgive me for the order.” \u003cbr\u003e     As the boys moved forward behind their colors the storm greatly intensified, with lightning, thunder and driving rain. Now in the eye of the storm, under heavy cannon and musket fire the cadets began taking casualties. Undeterred, they fought forward through a low section of the field with standing water and deep mud, with a number of the boys losing their socks and shoes. A 12 pound Napoleon cannon was abandoned in the face of the cadet’s charge, which the cheering boys captured. A Confederate officer watching the cadets said their charge \"surpassed anything that I witnessed during the war.” \u003cbr\u003e     General Breckinridge would later ride to their position and say “Young gentlemen, I have you to thank for the result of today’s operations.
